The Races
Team Minichiello compete on the World Cup circuit which consists of eight races taking place throughout Europe and North America between November and February each year. Europa Cup and Americas Cup circuits provide competition for teams just below World Cup level. World Cup races consist of two runs on a single day.
World Cup teams are ranked according to their previous results and the top ten teams are drawn at random before each race to decide the starting order for the first run. This means that a team ranked in the top ten in the world may be given a starting number anywhere from 1 to 10. Once these first ten starting positions have been decided the remaining teams are given their starting order from 11 onwards.
After the first run of the race teams are ranked according to their finishing position form the first run and the second run proceeds in reverse order from last place through to the race leaders. Overall finishing position is decided by the combined time of both runs.
Teams are awarded points for finishing position in each race. After all eight races are completed, the team accumulating the most points are crowned World Cup champions for the year.
At the end of each season a World Championships is held, the only exception being an Olympic year where the Olympics take the place of that year’s World Championships. World Championships and Olympics differ from World Cup races in that they take place over two days and consist of four runs rather than the usual two.
